Speed and Safety
Brantley Speed and Safety Program
In response to received correspondence, please note that the speed limit for state/federal
highways is set by the State, thus the State of Alabama has set the speed limit for the town
limit(s) of Brantley at 35 mph. There are two times during the day that the speed limit changes
from 35 mph to 25 mph during the school year: 7:30 am – 8:30 am (when children/buses are
arriving at school) and 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm (when children/buses are departing the school).
Notification of 25 mph is shown by the flashing sign above the roadway located at school area.
The Town of Brantley had a speed survey conducted on April 21, 2015 from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm
that reflected traffic count of 5,290 vehicles traveling Hwy. 331 during this time frame. 310
total offences occurred within the town limit revealing the following: 61 vehicles exceeding >20
mph over set speed limit, 40 vehicles exceeding >30 mph over set speed limit, 30 vehicles
exceeding >76 mph over set speed limit and 179 vehicles exceeding 35 mph. Enforcement takes
place at 11 mph over the 35/25 mph limit. Meaning that citation notice is not issued unless the
vehicle is exceeding 10 miles over the state set speed limit. This number of vehicles and the
number of serious violations (by our school and on the one (1) mile stretch of residential street)
was reason enough for the need for photo enforcement. Thus, the Alabama Legislature passed
the Town of Brantley’s bill to install a photo camera in 2015, location of camera is Brantley
School.
The Town of Brantley has signs at all town limit entrances stating” “PHOTO ENFORCED”.
There are two electronic signs ($7,000/ea. investment) at each end of Hwy. 331 which reflects
the speed of oncoming vehicle. Prior to reaching the photo camera there are two signs warning
the driver that they are approaching photo camera. Enough stated about photo camera sign
awareness.
Photo camera citations are not reported to the state as points against your license or insurance;
only if a certified law enforcement officer issues a citation, does this take place; also the
violation amount would triple ($217.00/237.00).
First notice is sent CERTIFIED MAIL (meaning signature is required); if citation is not picked
up from Post Office within 10 (ten) days, the packet is returned to sender; the second notice will
not include the photos, only a notice and this notice will be sent directly to registered owner of
vehicle at address listed on title of vehicle.
The most wonderful aspect of the Photo Camera is “NO DISCRIMINATION”. The camera
